Tropical Deciduous Forest

Location

Tropical Deciduous Forests are located at tropical and subtropical latitudes. Tropical Deciduous Forest are the monsoon forests found in large parts of India, Northern Australia and in Central America. Tropical Deciduous Forests thrive where the rainfall is between 70cm and 200 cm. In India these forests are found in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, plains of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana too. In Madhya Pradesh the Satpura forests are the examples of Tropical Deciduous Forests. Deciduous forests tend to thrive in areas that have mountains, and particularly in places that have a range of types of soil.

Climate

The temperature in these forests does not go to the extremes. They go through all the 4 seasons and experience seasonal changes like trees shed their leaves in the dry season to conserve water. The trees in these forests shed their leaves for about six to eight weeks in summer. Though these forests occur in climates that are warm year-round, and may receive several hundred centimeters of rain per year, they have long dry seasons which last several months and vary with geographic location. These seasonal droughts have great impact on all living things in the forest. Dry forests are highly sensitive to excessive burning and deforestation.

Vegetation

Tropical dry broadleaf forests are territories with a forest cover that is not very dense and has often an unkempt, irregular appearance, especially in the dry season. This type of forests often include bamboo and teak as the dominant large tree species, such as in the Phi Pan Nam Range, part of the Central Indochina dry forests. They are affected by often very long and intense seasonal dry periods and, though less biologically diverse than rainforests, tropical dry forests are home to a wide variety of wildlife. Some of the trees that are common in these forests are teak, sal, shisham, neem, bamboo, sandalwood, mulberry, peepal etc. Hardwood trees like teak, sal, shisham and mulberry are extremely useful for making furniture, transport and constructional materials.

Animals found

Tropical dry forests are home to a wide variety of wildlife including monkeys, deer, large cats, parrots, various rodents, and ground dwelling birds. Mammalian biomass tends to be higher in dry forests than in rain forests, especially in Asian and African dry forests. Many of these species display extraordinary adaptations to the difficult climate. Migration and hibernation are two adaptations used by the animals in this biome. The Tropical Deciduous Forests are also a home to many animals like tigers, lions, elephants, langoors and wild pigs. Many reptiles and insects are also found in these forests.

A village where nobody would want to live

I live in a village named ‘Similarity’. The people who live here wear the same color of clothes, red and white. Actually these are the only two colors we know of. We have two animals, deer and cat. I also have a pet cat named whites as it is white in color. In my free time I play snakes and ladder as we have no other game. We grow potatoes outside our houses as we have no other food item, and we eat those potatoes!

One day when I was walking outside the house, I met a man who was wearing clothes of different color. I was surprised and asked him about it. He laughed and told me that this was only one color and there were many others. He took me to his village named ‘Diversity’.

I was astonished seeing his village. There were different variety of food, many colors, different types of animals, various festivals etc. Then I thought how boring my life was compared to the life of the man. That is why ‘Diversity’ is important.
